What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who embeds directly with a company’s customers to design, build, and ship the integrations that get a product into production. Instead of building generic features from a roadmap, an FDE works the last mile: scoping a customer’s specific environment, writing real code against their systems, and staying attached to the account through go-live and beyond.

The role sits between engineering and customer success but is a genuine build job — FDEs ship production code, not slide decks. It’s the model Palantir made famous and that a new generation of AI-native companies (Ramp, Sierra, Decagon, Cognition, and others) have adopted to get complex, customer-specific software live fast.

  • Customer-embedded

Works directly with a customer’s engineering team, not just internal stakeholders.

  • Production code

Ships real integrations and workflows, then hardens what works into reusable platform primitives.

  • Full-loop ownership

Owns discovery through rollout — scoping, building, and debugging live in the customer’s environment.
